PASTOR POPHIN: The gasp

By PASTOR TOMMY POPHIN

It is the sound that is made when the unbelievable happens. It’s the sucking of air otherwise known as gasping.

It seems, as the days roll on, I find myself gasping more and more frequently as I watch the local and national news or hear stories from people I love. In fact, I have come to the point where I would rather not watch the news. It is all because of “the gasp.”

I hate the images that come across the television of children murdered, woman abused and men losing their minds because of the influence of alcohol and drugs. The ungodly and awful has taken place. And when the research is done and the answer as to why is found, the problem is sin. Sin committed and sin effective. One person’s sin against another. And we gasp.

If somehow we understood the affect of sin before we commit it, perhaps we would choose the right way instead of the wrong. One effect of all our sin is separation from God.

David had to bear up under the weight of the sin he committed against Bathsheba and Uriah. You can read about it in 2 Samuel 11-12. When I read the account of what happened, I gasp. Part of the affect of sin on David’s life was that God spared his life but took his son’s. How sad that is. After going through a period of grieving his son’s death, he started down the road of restoration of his relationship with his Heavenly Father.

Just like a son’s relationship with his earthly father, sometimes torn apart by rebellion, David’s relationship with his Heavenly Father was in shambles. At least that was true from David’s perspective. And so David goes to his Father and pleads for a restored relationship. The account of that plea is found in Psalm 51 where David prays, “Have mercy on me, O God, according to your UNFAILING LOVE; according to your GREAT COMPASSION blot out my transgressions. WASH AWAY all my iniquity and CLEANSE ME from sin.”
