On Thursday, May 1, the National Day of Prayer will take place and millions of Americans will unite at more than 42,000 locations from coast-to-coast to pray.
Why would millions of people stop what they are doing, gather together and speak into the air or in the recesses of their minds with some expectation that things are really going to change? Is their truly someone listening who can do something about the current state of affairs in our homes, work places, communities and nation? The answer is a resounding, “yes!”
Yes, there is a God who loves us and cares about the affairs of mankind. The amazing thing is that He invites us to join Him in bringing about His purposes upon the earth through prayer. Of all the things the followers of Jesus could have asked ask Him to teach them to do, they asked Him to teach them to pray. Jesus responded by saying, “Pray in this manner; Our Father in heaven, hallowed be Your name. Your kingdom come. Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.”
Prayer is God’s invitation for us to join Him in accomplishing His purposes upon the earth. Prayer unlocks heaven’s blessing upon our homes, churches, schools, businesses and government. Prayer is humbling ourselves before our Creator and acknowledging our need for Him. Prayer is admitting that unless the Lord intervenes in the affairs of men all we’ll ever see is what man can do.
2 Chronicles 7:14 provides us with further incentive to pray. “If My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land.”
