Food drive benefits senior center

One of the best ways to effectively give back to the community is team work. Ending the holiday season strong, Lakewell House and the Senior Center of Mineral Wells came together to provide canned food for the senior citizens of Mineral Wells.

Lakewell House is a local assisted-living center with a strong presence in the community that hopes to do even more in the coming year. With a recent change in staffing, the center is excited about 2014. Lakewell House puts on at least two events per month, with the canned food drive having been one of the events during the last month of 2013. The drive ran through the entire month of December, and the food raised during the drive was delivered to seniors in need at the Senior Center on Jan. 3.

Lakewell House's Denise Castillo said, “this is something I would like to see ongoing. In fact, I am going to see to it that we have a canned-food drive that goes on throughout the year.”

When one thinks of the Senior Center of Mineral Wells, food is something that always comes to mind. The canned food drive, which directly benefited the seniors of the center, was very well received.

Serving around 900 meals a month, the Senior Center is a local powerhouse when it comes to providing food for the elderly. However, with that many meals served a month comes a substantial amount of expenditure as well.

Meals at the Senior Center have a price tag of $3.50 per person; however, this is merely a suggested donation, so people who cannot afford this are given meals at a lower cost, or even free of charge in some instances. In other words, no one goes unserved at the Senior Center. Unfortunately, there is still a cost for these services.
