2013 Senior Expo Is Upon Us!

Mineral Wells Index

— Do you remember when flu shots came in groups of ten? Day after day my mom would drag us kicking and screaming, mentally if not externally, to the local clinic for yet another in the series of ten injections. I realize she was doing it for our good, but back then it seemed a traumatic ordeal.

What a difference between the early beginnings of preventive flu shots and today’s single inoculation, so simple and easy. Now I voluntarily take myself in for an annual injection.

At tomorrow’s 2013 Senior Expo, CVS will be administering flu shots from 9 a.m. to noon. The injections will be free for Medicare card holders, and will cost about $32 for those without cards.

This year’s free health fair is being brought to you through the generosity of our Title Sponsor, Renew Home Health, and of our Bronze Sponsors, Abbi Home Care, Arbor House Weatherford, Bethany HomeHealth Services, IntegraCare HomeHealth & Hospice, Palo Pinto Nursing & Rehab, and Physical Therapy Dynamics. We appreciate the support that enables us to serve our senior adult community.

And speaking of generous support, breakfast and lunch are being provided for the Expo seniors by Walmart, Mesquite Pit and Chick-fil-a of Weatherford.

We will serve breakfast at the Mineral Wells Senior Center from 8-9 a.m., and Expo attendees can come and go between 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. for lunch.

Although meals will be served at the senior center, all other events of the day will take place across the street at First Baptist Church, 100 S.W. 4th Ave.

After registering, senior adult participants may browse the exhibits set up in the church gym, take advantage of free health screenings that include vision and hearing checks and a variety of blood tests, or attend one of the informative workshops on topics that range from Medicare and elder law issues to how to prevent joint injury and falls.

We are extremely grateful to the staff of First Baptist and to all the screeners and workshop leaders who will be donating their time and services for the Expo.

Friday’s activities won’t end with the Expo at 1 p.m. The monthly dance scheduled for that evening will begin at 6:30 p.m., as usual, featuring a Sock Hop theme. We thank Misty Stekoll of Bethany HomeHealth Services for providing decorations and food for our dance each month.

Next Monday, Sept. 16, our Movie Night film will be the timeless romantic drama “An Affair to Remember,” starring Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr. We’ll start serving the free soup and salad supper at 6 p.m.

On Wednesday, October 16, we’ll be taking another trip to Winstar Casino. The bus holds a capacity of 55 persons, so if you are over age 50 and would like to go call us at 940-325-6470 to reserve your seat. The $20 cost, payable in advance, includes bus fare, a free senior breakfast, and $20 of casino playing credit.

For those who have called to ask about another AARP Defensive Driving course, the instructor’s travel abroad has made it necessary to postpone it for another month. We have scheduled the next class for Wednesday, Nov. 6, from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Call or stop by the center reception desk to put your name on the class list.

Our Senior Center goal is to meet needs of senior adults in this community in every way we can. Please let us hear your feedback to help us do better. In the meantime, we’ll plan to see you at the 2013 Senior Expo!
