Spring Has Sprung

Mineral Wells Index

— Upon leaving the house Sunday morning, my husband and I startled a yard full of robins. “Hurray, Spring is here!” I cried. After all the ice and snow we had this winter, the warmth of rising temperatures and the bright colors of budding trees and flowers are a welcome relief.

A swell of outdoor activity is appearing with the change of seasons. I spent Saturday morning watching two of my grandsons play Little League soccer, and some of the others started baseball the same day.  Weekend bicyclists and hikers have hit the State Park and Trailway.  Getting outside feels almost compulsory when Spring bursts into bloom.

Some changes coming up in our Senior Center schedule are not necessarily seasonal, but will certainly add to the fun.  Beginning Friday, April 4, we will follow our monthly Brunch with a movie.  Tomorrow we will start the new Disney animated film “Frozen” at 11:30.  There is no charge for viewing and everyone is welcome to stay for the show.

Also debuting tomorrow is the first of a six-week beginning guitar class that will meet at 1 p.m. every Friday through May 16, except for a break on April 18 when the center will close for Good Friday.  Learners will need to bring their own guitars.

Another new offering is a six-week course in Microwave Cooking every Tuesday afternoon at 1.  Volunteer teacher Karen Walker will provide the materials and ingredients, so all you have to do is stick around after lunch.

If you are interested in attending either of these classes, call 940-325-6470 or stop by the reception desk to let us know you’re coming.

Our other classes will continue as usual throughout the Spring.  These include Basic Computer from 9 -11 a.m. and 1-3 p.m. on Mondays; Spanish Conversation at 9 a.m. and Crochet at 2 p.m. on Tuesdays; Bridge at 1 p.m. and English Literacy at 2 on Wednesdays; and Thursday morning Line Dancing at 9:30 and Painting at 10.  All of these lessons are free to anyone over age 50, so come on down and try something new.

Continuing the seasonal celebration, the theme for this month’s dance on Friday evening, April 11 is Spring Fling.  Deck yourself out in flowers and butterflies and join us at 6:30 for good music and delicious food.

Next Thursday, April 10, is the last day that we’ll offer free Tax Preparation Assistance.  Please give us a call if you want to take advantage of this helpful service.

For those who’d like to join us for our monthly Senior Night Out, we’ll be meeting for supper at Old School Pizza on Thursday evening, April 10, at 6.  Please let us know if you plan to come so we can give the restaurant an approximate number of people to expect.

During the Spring and every other season, there is always lots going on at the Senior Center.  If you’re looking for a fun and interesting place to spend part of your day, make this your first stop.  There’s something for everyone at the Senior Center.
