Santa Claus is coming

Mineral Wells Index

— By Vivian Conrad | Senior Center Director

The other day a young mother asked about the Santa that was coming to our Senior Center, because the one she had taken her kids to see at a store “wasn’t very good.”

I’m not sure about her criteria for judging Santa’s effectiveness, but the one coming to our Breakfast with Santa fundraiser at the center this Saturday would definitely fall under the category of great. Rev. Barry Holmes has the gentle, cheerful spirit – not to mention a naturally full, white beard – that characterizes the essence of St. Nick.

The idea of “Santa” has spanned different cultures for hundreds of years, beginning with Nicholas, the Fourth Century Greek Christian Bishop of Myra who was known for giving gifts to poor families. Whether called St. Nicholas, Sinterklaas, Pere Noel, Father Christmas, or Santa Claus, the figure of legend represents very real values of generosity, caring and love that transcend boundaries of age, class or gender.

That is why we are proud to host Santa Claus at the Senior Center this Saturday, Dec. 8. We will serve a pancake breakfast with sausage, orange juice and bananas, provided by Walmart manager Scotty Echols, from 8:30-11:30 that morning. Cost of the meal is $3 for adults and $1.50 for kids under 12. Photographer Gerald Smith will be on hand to take pictures of children with Santa, who will have treats on hand.

A crafts sale begins today at the Senior Center. Shoppers may browse from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. today and Friday, and from 8:30 a.m. till 2 p.m. on Saturday.

Tonight the center will join with Lakewell House and Palo Pinto Nursing and Rehab in hosting a Progressive Dinner Party beginning with appetizers at Lakewell House, then moving on to dinner at the Senior Center and ending with dessert at Palo Pinto Nursing and Rehab, this free party will feature lots of good food as well as favors and door prizes. Call before 2 p.m. this afternoon if you want to join us for a night of fun.

And that’s just the beginning of our December fun. Next Tuesday, Dec. 11, our lunch will feature holiday foods from around the world. If you would be interested in decorating one of our tables for the international feast, please let us know by dropping by the center or calling us at (940) 325-6470.

No reservation is needed for our monthly dance on Friday, Dec. 14. DJ Joe Baker will start the music at 6:30 p.m., and tickets are $3 at the door. Everyone is welcome.

The holiday season wouldn’t be complete without a viewing of “It’s A Wonderful Life.” That’s the movie we’ll show on our monthly movie night on Monday, Dec. 17. We serve a free soup and salad supper at 6 p.m., with salad and dessert provided by Palo Pinto Nursing and Rehab. Can’t beat the price or the fun of a free movie night at the center.

Don’t forget to register for the LifeLine Screening on Tuesday, Dec. 18. These important affordable screenings for stroke, aneurysm and osteoporosis are available by appointment only, so call or drop by the center for registration information.

At Mineral Wells Senior Center, we try to keep a “Santa” spirit of love and giving all year long.  We hope you will always find friends, encouragement and laughter here. If you’ve never stopped by the center, we hope you’ll make time this month to let us meet you. It’s never too soon to enjoy the fun.
