Senior Center Cooking Up a Tasteful Event

By Vivian Conrad | Special to the Index

Phone calls and correspondence are flying as Mineral Wells Senior Center plans its fourth annual Taste of Palo Pinto County. As a self-funded, non-profit community day center for adults over age 50, the Senior Center counts heavily on this major fundraiser to generate revenue for programming and operating costs.

This year’s Taste of Palo Pinto County is scheduled to take place at Holiday Hills Country Club on Monday, July 15. The event features tasting booths with dishes prepared by local restaurants and food vendors. The purchase of a $40 ticket allows patrons to sample cuisine at will from 6 to 8 p.m. The fundraiser also includes live, silent and brown bag auctions. DJ Joe Baker, a Texas Western Swing Music Hall of Fame inductee, will provide music throughout the evening until the party ends at 10.

Led by Ways and Means Committee Chair Ken Johnson, members of the center’s Board of Directors organize the annual event.

Their first task is to line up vendors who are willing to donate time and food for the fundraiser.  The restaurants and individuals participating in this year’s Taste of Palo Pinto County are Chili’s, Chubby’s BBQ & Grill, Fuzzy’s Taco Shop, Golden Chick, Hayes Station Coffee, Holiday Hills Country Club, Mineral Wells Senior Center, Mesquite Pit, Natty Flat Smokehouse, Palo Pinto Challenge Inc., Pastafina of Mineral Wells, Shotgun’s BBQ Restaurant, Taste and See Bakery Treats, Tastefully Simple, The Cellar and Top Shelf Liquor Warehouse.

The Senior Center relies heavily on the support of sponsors for a successful event. This year a record number of businesses and individuals have rallied to back the Taste of Palo Pinto County fundraiser. Sponsors at the 5-Star level include Baum-Carlock-Bumgardner Funeral Home, Diamond Pharmacy, First Financial Bank, Tim Gary, Ram Country Chrysler Dodge Jeep and Upham Oil & Gas.

Four-Star Sponsors for 2013 are Alpine Construction, Goodrum Renovation, Jack Powell Auto Group, Link Field Services, the Mineral Wells Index, Palo Pinto General Hospital, PECO Facet, Progressive Waste Solutions, Texas Farm Bureau Insurance and Titan Bank.

Since early Monday morning, our volunteers have been unpacking, sorting, pricing and arranging truckloads of treasure for the annual Gigantic Garage Sale that begins tonight. Our $10-per-person Early Bird Sale will run from 5-7 this evening, but the real fun begins tomorrow morning. The sale from 9-5 on Friday, March 14, and 9-1 on Saturday, March 15, is free to the public.
