Looking for a happy ending

Last weekend I was reading a book by a self-published author. Though it contained a number of technical errors, the story line was entertaining with lots of action, humor and suspense. But in the middle of the 23rd chapter, the book suddenly ended. In what seemed like mid-paragraph, the writer simply quit writing. There was no conflict resolution, no conclusion or answers to crucial questions – the words just died away.

“Wait,” I almost shouted, “how does the lawsuit end? Do enemies steal the heroine’s land or not? Does her kidnapper evade the law? Does she end up with the man she loves?”
