Better than jail

Mineral Wells Index

— A couple of days ago I overheard this exchange between two of our pool players:

“Good mornin’ young man. How’re you doing today?”

“Well, I’m here. Guess that’s better than being in jail.”

I’d like to elaborate on that observation and suggest a few things besides jail that being at the Mineral Wells Senior Center “is better than.”

Spending time at the Senior Center is better than sitting home, bored and alone.

Talking to people here is better than talking to nobody but yourself all day.

Eating our home-style meals is better than microwaving a bowl of canned soup for lunch.

Playing games here is better than watching hours of game shows on TV.

See? There are many reasons to visit the Senior Center besides staying out of jail.

Tomorrow’s monthly Birthday Party is a good example of the kind of fun we like to have here. Max Wheeler and his band will tune up around 10 a.m., while the popcorn is popping. After handing out door prizes donated by community businesses, like Cole’s House of Flowers, Abbi Home Health, Palo Pinto Nursing and Rehab, Bargains for Better Homes, My Father’s Business, Awesome Blossoms and Mr. Jim’s Pizza, we’ll enjoy a barbeque-chicken dinner, sponsored by Waddy Best Value Pharmacy. Cake and ice cream will round out the fun. Seats fill up quickly every month, so call ahead if you want to attend the party.

Next Tuesday, March 26, we’ll be offering an AARP Defensive Driving course at the center, from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., with a break for lunch. If you’re interested in attending, call us at (940) 325-6470 for more information.

The Senior Center will be closed for the Good Friday holiday on March 29, but we’ll open as usual the following Monday, April 1.

Whether it’s computer or oil painting classes, dominoes, Bingo, Wii Bowling, exercise, line dancing, or more, there’s always something going on at the Senior Center. We try to offer something for every taste. Come by and see us.
