Hurrah for Volunteers!

Mineral Wells Index

— Great Britain’s King George IV (1762-1830) once said, “The highest of distinctions is service to others.”  This year’s Senior Center volunteers have certainly distinguished themselves through service.

Since April 6-13 is National Volunteer Week, I’d like to take this opportunity to commend all the men and women who have donated time, energy and talents to the Senior Center during the past year.  There is not room on this newspaper page to list their names individually, but I hope each one of them knows how very much we appreciate their service.  From teaching classes to wiping tables, preparing tax returns, working in fundraisers or providing music and entertainment, their help has enabled many of our programs and activities.  On behalf of the Senior Center staff and Board of Directors, I thank everyone who volunteered at the Senior Center this year.

Two regular volunteers will be busy as usual at our dance this Friday night, April 11.  Joe Baker is the award-winning DJ who provides music for our country western swing dancing, and Misty Stekoll of Bethany HomeHealth Services furnishes the food, decorations and door prizes.  Tomorrow night’s dance will feature a Spring Fling theme, so deck yourself out in flowers and butterflies and join us at 6:30 for a foot-stepping good time.

Daniel Norris is another volunteer we’ll see at the Senior Center on Friday.  Tomorrow is the second of six beginning guitar classes that Dan is teaching for us on Friday afternoons at 1.  It’s not too late to join in, but learners will need to bring their own guitars.

Another six-week class currently in progress is Microwave Cooking, taught by volunteer Karen Walker.  Her sessions meet after lunch at 1 on Tuesday afternoons and end in time for the Crochet class that starts at 2.

Other classes offered at the Senior Center are Basic Computer every Monday from 9-11 a.m. And 1-3 p.m., Conversational Spanish on Tuesday mornings at 9, Exercise groups at 11 on Tuesdays and Thursdays, English Literacy classes on Wednesdays at 2, and Oil Painting at 10 on Thursday mornings.  We are grateful to Linda Gilley, Patricia Luna, Brenda Lee, Rosette Sutton, and Dorothy Dowler, who are the volunteers who lead these sessions.

Although the Senior Center will close for Good Friday on April 18, we’re still planning some Easter fun on Thursday, April 17, with a Decorated Egg Contest.  Eggs and art materials will be available 8:30-11a.m. for anyone who’d like to strut their creativity.  Judges will award prizes for first- through fourth-place winners.

Instead of an older classic, this month’s Movie Night will feature Disney’s new release “Saving Mr. Banks.”  It chronicles Walt Disney’s 20-year quest to capture Mary Poppins on film.  Anyone is welcome to join us at 6 on Monday evening, April 21, for the free movie and soup-and-salad supper.

It is no exaggeration to say that were it not for our volunteers, the Senior Center would be stuck in the mud.  The people who give and serve are the energy source from which most of our programs flow.

If you would be interested in volunteering at the Senior Center, please stop by to see us between 8 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. any weekday or give us a call at 940-325-6470 for more information.  We will be delighted to speak with you.

Thanks again to all the wonderful people who help us in so many ways!  We appreciate you more than you may know.
