Thanks for your Help

Last weekend my son and his wife showed up at our door and announced, “We’re here to help you clean your garage.” They had driven in from Cleburne because they knew how big a job it would be. With the extra hands and strong, young backs, we finished the project in less than half the time it would have taken my husband and me alone.

It’s always nice to have some help, and that’s exactly what we got from Denise Castillo at Lakewell House last Saturday. The BBQ dinner fundraiser she put together for the Senior Center, featuring food donated by the Mesquite Pit, Old School Pizza, Hashknife on the Chisolm, and one of her personal friends, raised a little more than $600. That will give a big boost to our daily meals program. We are extremely grateful to Denise for all the time and effort she invested on our behalf, and to Lakewell House for sponsoring and hosting the event. We’d also like to thank all those who donated silent auction items and food, and those who supported the benefit with their attendance. Your help means a lot to us.

Unless they postpone the Super Bowl game for snow, the party is on for Sunday, Feb. 2. Adults of all ages are welcome to join us at the Senior Center for a Super Bowl party beginning at 5 p.m. We’re asking those who come to pitch in $3 for food, but come on anyway even if you can’t afford the donation. Please call us at 940-325-6479 some time this week to let us know you’re planning to attend.

Free tax preparation assistance will begin at the Senior Center on Feb. 6 and will continue every Thursday through April 10. Please call ahead to sign up for an appointment with one of our IRS-certified volunteers to cut down on wait time. Come prepared with the current year’s tax package and or label, all W-2 and 1099 forms and information for other income, information for all deductions or credits, a copy of last year’s tax return, proof of account for direct deposit of refund (e.g., voided check), Social Security cards or Individual Taxpayer Identification notices (cards for you, your spouse, and/or dependents), and proof of identification for yourself and/or your spouse.

Have you heard that old saying, “One person’s junk is another person’s treasure”? Well let me tell you, we’ve got treasure to spare!

Since early Monday morning, our volunteers have been unpacking, sorting, pricing and arranging truckloads of treasure for the annual Gigantic Garage Sale that begins tonight. Our $10-per-person Early Bird Sale will run from 5-7 this evening, but the real fun begins tomorrow morning. The sale from 9-5 on Friday, March 14, and 9-1 on Saturday, March 15, is free to the public.
