A Winning Streak

It’s very satisfying to win a prize, especially if the victory results from your own creative effort.

An award validates the decision to submit your labor to the judgment of others.

Some of our Senior Center participants and staff swept the awards at last week’s Palo Pinto County Fair.  Sandy Vinson’s apple pie and Phyllis Wright’s crocheted baby blanket and bonnet took the Grand Champion ribbons in their divisions.

Five Reserve Grand Champion awards included two for Don Wright in the pies and cookies categories, two for Sandy Vinson in cakes and breads, and one for new board member JLonnie Stafford in black and white photos.

Our own Assistant Director Linda Gilley won first and third-place ribbons for her fruit and poppy seed cakes.

Karen Walker received a blue ribbon for a hand-crafted bib apron.

Kay Cornish’s oil paintings placed third, fourth and fifth in their division, and JLonnie Stafford came away with another blue ribbon for his photo of a white iris.

Even I got in on the fun, winning two fourth, two third and one first-place ribbons for some of my photographs.

The county fair is a great way to share your talents with the community.

We’re proud of our Senior Center folks who took part, and we urge others to consider joining the fun next year.

The center is off to a good start this year.

After taking a holiday break, our Spanish class has resumed its Tuesday morning meetings and other regular activities are running at full steam.

As always, we are grateful to the volunteers who step up to teach classes, lead exercise groups, and sponsor weekly and monthly events.

A long-time Senior Center supporter, Lakewell House is going the second mile to help us this month.

  • Ordinary heroes

It seems kind of funny to me that our society celebrates the abilities of some people while ignoring those of others.

  • FEB BD.jpg Treasures Galore

Have you heard that old saying, “One person’s junk is another person’s treasure”? Well let me tell you, we’ve got treasure to spare!

Since early Monday morning, our volunteers have been unpacking, sorting, pricing and arranging truckloads of treasure for the annual Gigantic Garage Sale that begins tonight. Our $10-per-person Early Bird Sale will run from 5-7 this evening, but the real fun begins tomorrow morning. The sale from 9-5 on Friday, March 14, and 9-1 on Saturday, March 15, is free to the public.
