Getting Back to Basics . . .

It started as strep throat two days before Christmas, which then evolved into a throat infection and bronchitis. After three consecutive weeks on antibiotics, I actually felt well for two whole days before coming down with a plain ol’ head cold which has lasted more than a week now.

I ran the gauntlet of prescription and over-the-counter cold medicines to soothe my sore throat and control a nagging cough, all with no success. Finally I became desperate enough to try the treatment my mother had been urging me to use all along. Mix an eighth teaspoon each of ginger powder, ground cloves and cayenne pepper into 8 ounces of hot water. Gargle with it, and follow by gargling some unsweetened pineapple juice. Yes, I said gargle it. Repeat three times a day.  I couldn’t believe it – the folk remedy worked better than all the high-priced name-brand drugs I’d been buying.

There’s a lot to be said for getting back to basics. Advances in technology are great, and I use them every day. But some things just can’t be improved upon – things like laughter, friendship, and good old-fashioned fun.

All of those will be coming together this weekend at the BBQ benefit Lakewell House is throwing for us from 4-7 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 25. With door prizes, a silent auction and plenty of good food, it will be a party the whole community can enjoy. Spread the word to your family and friends and come on down to Lakewell House this Saturday for an evening of food and fun.

What’s better than watching the Super Bowl at home? Watching the ball game at a Super Bowl party with friends and food! We’ll have plenty of tailgate fare on hand at our Senior Center Super Bowl party on Sunday, Feb. 2. Doors will open at 5 p.m. in time for the 5:30 p.m. kick-off. It would be great if everyone could chip in a $3 donation to cover food expense, but if that’s too steep don’t let it stop you from coming. All adults are welcome.
