Bullies Beware!

My kids’ early education took place in a one-room mission school with two teachers and nine children in seven different grades.

Having grown up in a bully-free environment, my youngest son wasn’t sure what to do when he encountered one during a stateside furlough his 8th-grade year. Apparently he failed to show proper respect, because during a P.E. class one day the bigger boy attacked Josh from behind. We brought our son home from the emergency room with a concussion.

In a way, I can understand how raging hormonal changes might provoke aggression in junior high. But I am baffled when I see the same kind of behavior in adults. A “let’s settle this with our fists” attitude has no place among those who are supposed to be role models for a younger generation.

Especially troubling is violence directed against those who have difficulty defending themselves. Senior adults are included in that category. That’s why elder abuse is a criminal offense.

The Texas Attorney General lists intimidation, humiliation, harassment, threats of punishment, hitting, slapping, pinching, kicking, verbal abuse, or any oral, written or gestured language that includes disparaging or derogatory terms, regardless of the person’s ability to hear or comprehend, as examples of abuse. Any of these behaviors directed against persons age 65 or older can lead to arrest, fines, and/or imprisonment. I hope any potential bullies out there will think twice about threatening or harassing senior adults in our town, and especially anywhere near the Senior Center.

We’ve got some fun events scheduled for October. Halloween is the theme for this month’s dance on Friday, Oct. 11, at 6:30.  Dance sponsor Bethany HomeHealth Services will provide food and decorations.

A trip to Winstar Casino is on the calendar for Wednesday, Oct. 16, but as of today we’re 13 people short. We must have a minimum of 40 seniors signed up by next Monday, Oct. 7, or we’ll have to postpone the trip. Call us at 940-325-6470 or come by the Senior Center to sign up or get more information.

It seems kind of funny to me that our society celebrates the abilities of some people while ignoring those of others.

  • FEB BD.jpg Treasures Galore

Have you heard that old saying, “One person’s junk is another person’s treasure”? Well let me tell you, we’ve got treasure to spare!

Since early Monday morning, our volunteers have been unpacking, sorting, pricing and arranging truckloads of treasure for the annual Gigantic Garage Sale that begins tonight. Our $10-per-person Early Bird Sale will run from 5-7 this evening, but the real fun begins tomorrow morning. The sale from 9-5 on Friday, March 14, and 9-1 on Saturday, March 15, is free to the public.
