Time Flies

Mineral Wells Index

— Last weekend I missed my 40th high school class reunion in Louisville, Ky. Wow.  Forty years. When I was a teenager I couldn’t imagine being 40, much less celebrating a 40th class reunion. Now, as I look through the party pictures on Facebook, I’m discovering that all the people with whom I shared my youth are graying grandparents just like me.

Time certainly marches on. This year feels like it has barely gotten started, and yet it is already more than half over. Some of our significant annual markers are behind us – chocolate contest, Gigantic Garage Sale, International Food Fair, and Taste of Palo Pinto County, to name a few. We’ve been ticking off the special events with each passing month. Now we are preparing for the upcoming 2013 Senior Expo health fair scheduled from 8:30 a.m.-1 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 13.

Several informative workshops are lined up, as well as a number of free health screenings for the area’s senior adults. Watch for more details in the next few weeks.

Thanks to the generous contributions of many people in this community, our new freezer is installed and running. We are grateful to those who gave what they could to help with this need, and to Orville Bellamy who took on the job of collecting donations for us. We’d also like to express our appreciation to the guys from the City Maintenance Department who worked hard to get the old freezer out and the new one hooked up.  Mark Sparks and his crew always take good care of us, but this really went beyond the call of duty.

The county’s district attorney, Michael Burns, knows a lot about the latest frauds and scams targeting senior adults. He will be sharing this information, including tips for identifying, preventing and reporting scams, in a presentation at the Senior Center on Friday afternoon, Aug. 16, at 1 p.m.  Everyone is welcome to attend this free session in hopes that we can make our town

a safer place.

Tomorrow night’s dance will have a disco theme. We expect to see lots of polyester double knits in the building when we start at 6:30. We are grateful to Misty Stekoll of Bethany HomeHealth Services for providing food and decorations for our dances.

Our Movie Night on Monday, Aug. 19, will feature Cary Grant and Katherine Hepburn in the 1938 comedy “Bringing Up Baby.” The evening includes a free soup and salad supper, so why not plan to join us at 6 p.m. for the fun.

We’ll hold the year’s last indoor yard sale on Saturday, Aug. 24. If you have some stuff to sell, sign up at the reception desk or call us at 940-325-6470 to reserve a vendor table. You can set up after 2 p.m. on that Friday afternoon for the sale that will run from 8 a.m.-2 p.m. on Saturday.

The Senior Center has plenty of parties, classes and other events planned for the rest of this year. Monthly menus and activity calendars are available at our reception desk. Come see what we have to offer to help you pass the time this summer and beyond. We’d love to have you join us.
