Creative Pursuits

— Like many other Americans, I’ve been heading straight for the television as soon as I get home from work each evening. The Sochi Winter Olympics have captivated my interest for the past couple of weeks.

I am amazed at the training and skill of these cold-weather athletes.  The body contortions and aerial gymnastics of snowboarders, ski jumpers and ice skaters are breathtaking. Who would have thought human physiology could withstand such height and speed!

People have always pushed themselves to try new things, to plumb the depths of possibility and limitation. Although to a lesser physical degree, our Senior Center participants show the same tendencies as they learn new computer, language or craft skills. Folks of every age keep reaching for greater knowledge and variety of experience.

At the Senior Center we try to help individuals realize their goals.  We are always willing to respond to requests by offering new classes or activities. Toward that end, we are currently running a survey to assess the interests of senior adults in our community.

Some possibilities for future activities include weekly Rook or Spades card games, beginning French conversation, beginning Korean, a microwave cooking course, basic journalism, beginning guitar, a class in the fundamentals of poetry, or a Friday afternoon movie club.

If you would be interested in any of these, or if you have suggestions for other classes, activities or special events we might consider, please contact Vivian at 940-325-6470 to discuss your ideas.

In the meantime, our current programs are continuing as usual.  Monthly event and menu calendars are always available at our reception desk. We offer daily low-cost meals and a wide range of free programs for people over age 50. Why not stop by to see what the Senor Center can offer you.

Time is closing in for our annual Gigantic Garage Sale in March. We will be accepting donations of clean, usable items through Wednesday afternoon, March 12.  The Early Bird sale will open from 5-7 on Thursday evening, March 13, with a $10 admission fee. There is no cost for the public sales from 9-5 on Friday, March 14, and 9-1 on Saturday, March 15. Friday will also feature a bake sale, so come early to find the best bargains. The Garage Sale will take place in the City Activity Center at 735 Hood Road in Ft. Wolters Industrial Park.  We hope to see you there.

Free Income Tax Preparation Assistance continues at the Senior Center every Thursday through April 10. Call or come by to sign up for an appointment time.

At our St. Patrick’s Day party on Monday, March 17, we’re planning something we’ve never tried before. It you have a tall tale to tell, sign up for the Blarney Contest that will begin at 11 that morning.  Whoever tells the best whopper will receive an appropriate prize.

We’re always willing to try new things at the Senior Center, where creativity is our greatest natural resource. Come share your gifts and pursue your goals with us.
