New Starts: 365 new days to spend

I have some very specific goals for 2013. This will be the year I learn how to organize my office, finish reports and menu calendars ahead of time, and actually do some of that exercising I keep envisioning in my mind.

At its beginning, a changing year brims with potential. Things we’ve never been able to accomplish before somehow seem possible with 365 new days to spend.

At the Senior Center, we hope this year will bring some new and different events that will enrich the lives of our senior adults and their families.

But some things won’t change. We’ll continue many of our old favorite activities. The Silver Notes will keep singing on Mondays, we’ll pull out the BINGO balls every Wednesday and enjoy Wii Bowling on Thursdays. The Domino 42 players will go after each other on Tuesdays and the center will still host a dance every second Friday and Movie Night on the third Monday of every month, to name a few.

What I’d really like to see happen this year is a shift in people’s perception of the Senior Center and its participants.

I can’t count the number of times I’ve heard persons even in their 60’s and 70’s say, “Oh, I’m not old enough for that place.”  That is the misconception.

The Senior Center’s focus is not on aging, but on fullness of life. The people here keep their bodies active and minds engaged. They enjoy new experiences as well as long-time hobbies and pastimes.

This is a place to share friendship and fun at any age.

So at the start of this new year, I hope you will resolve to include the Senior Center in your life, either as a participant, a volunteer or a supporter. With the unique role we play in the Mineral Wells community, anyone can find a place here.

Have you heard that old saying, “One person’s junk is another person’s treasure”? Well let me tell you, we’ve got treasure to spare!

Since early Monday morning, our volunteers have been unpacking, sorting, pricing and arranging truckloads of treasure for the annual Gigantic Garage Sale that begins tonight. Our $10-per-person Early Bird Sale will run from 5-7 this evening, but the real fun begins tomorrow morning. The sale from 9-5 on Friday, March 14, and 9-1 on Saturday, March 15, is free to the public.
