If this were a movie I might be laughing. Talk about a series of unfortunate events!
It started small, with broken oven thermostats. Then we discovered rusted-out holes in the steam table and we had to replace all the bins.
Then the compressors blew up in the commercial freezer and it died. The same week two parts went out on the commercial deep fryer we use for our monthly fish dinner and we had to call in another repairman. Within a week of installing a new freezer, the commercial refrigerator compressors started breaking apart and we’ll have to buy a new one. And in between all that, at least four times we’ve had repairmen out to work on the ice machine that keeps quitting. At least the vending company bore the cost for replacing the motor that went out on the Coke machine.
Thanks to the most successful Taste of Palo Pinto County fundraiser ever, we’ve had money to pay for all the massive repair bills and to order the new appliances. But… dang. We had really counted on that money to pay staff salaries and keep some of our programs going, and now that we’ve used it up we’re right back to where we started.
With our bank balance barely in the black and occasionally dipping into the red, our Board of Directors decided to attack the problem head-on.
They trimmed several thousand dollars from the budget and finally voted to raise the suggested lunch donation by 50 cents. Beginning Oct. 1, we will ask people to donate $3.50 for their lunches. However, the price of the meal is still a voluntary contribution, and people may continue to pay what they can afford. If persons can’t manage the $3.50, or $3, or anything at all, we will still serve them.
