A Salute to Service Workers

While I was sipping hot chocolate the other day, wrapped in a bulky sweater and fuzzy slippers inside my warm house, a city maintenance crew was down the street battling what appeared to be a broken water main. All day the men struggled against ice and freezing cold to restore water to our neighborhood.

I really appreciate the selflessness of public and emergency service personnel. Ambulances continued running in sleet and snow to answer thousands of emergency calls throughout the weekend.  Road crews labored round the clock to clear miles and miles of frozen roads, and utility workers braved the elements to restore power to thousands of homes.  Police and fire officers stayed busy clearing accident scenes and aiding stranded motorists. To all those people who sacrifice their own comfort and safety for the good of others, I’d like to say a huge and heartfelt Thank You. May you be blessed with the same measure of blessing you’ve given.

Although the icy weather preempted our Senior Center Variety Show and International Food Fair, the rest of this month’s activities are running on schedule so far.  These include the Breakfast with Santa fundraiser coming up this Saturday morning, Dec. 14, from 8:30-11:30. Patrons may buy a pancake and sausage breakfast, shop our Crafts and Bake Sales, and have their pictures taken with Santa Claus.

This Friday, Dec. 13, elder law attorney Sandra Reed will be on hand after lunch to share information about Medicaid eligibility and wills, and will be available to answer questions about senior legal issues. Anyone is welcome to sit in on the session that will begin around 12:45.

Next Monday’s Movie Night, Dec. 16., will feature the holiday classic, “It’s A Wonderful Life.”  Join us at 6 for a free soup and salad supper.

On Tuesday, Dec. 17, a representative from the Americans for Better Hearing Foundation will be on hand after lunch to demonstrate some of the specialized telecommunications devices that are available at little or no cost to seniors who are hearing impaired. Even for those of us who can still hear, it will be fascinating to see some of the latest trends in technology.  Whether hearing or impaired, you are invited to join us at 12:45 for this interesting program.

Since early Monday morning, our volunteers have been unpacking, sorting, pricing and arranging truckloads of treasure for the annual Gigantic Garage Sale that begins tonight. Our $10-per-person Early Bird Sale will run from 5-7 this evening, but the real fun begins tomorrow morning. The sale from 9-5 on Friday, March 14, and 9-1 on Saturday, March 15, is free to the public.
