In her book “Eat, Pray, Love,” Elizabeth Gilbert wrote, “In the end, though, maybe we must all give up trying to pay back the people in this world who sustain our lives. In the end, maybe it’s wiser to surrender before the miraculous scope of human generosity and to just keep saying thank you, forever and sincerely, for as long as we have voices.”
My own heart has echoed Gilbert’s sentiments during this past week.
With each thank you note I write, on the heels of our highly successful Taste of Palo Pinto fundraiser, I’m overwhelmed with a sense of appreciation for the “miraculous scope of human generosity” in this community. Owing to the support of so many families, individuals and businesses, our Senior Center is experiencing a momentary rest from financial worries for the first time in well over a year. Our gratitude is almost euphoric in its intensity.
Whether or not we have money in the bank, life rolls right along at the Senior Center. Karaoke party last Friday. Movie night on Monday.
Birthday party tomorrow. Weekly Spanish conversation and painting classes; dominoes, Bingo and Wii bowling; monthly dances.
Something’s always going on around this place.
One of the reasons we try to offer a variety of programs and activities is to defeat inertia. A great temptation of advancing age is to sit down and stay there. Research has shown that physical movement keeps more blood flowing to the brain, helping it to stay healthier longer. Mental exercise lengthens the life of all those neural connectors, while social interaction reduces the risk of geriatric depression. And nutritional support is necessary for healthy bodies. Our goal at the Senior Center is to meet needs of older adults on all these levels.
That is why, regardless of broken appliances, flooded restrooms, or other budget-busting mishaps, we do our best to keep trudging along. Our Senior Center staff, volunteers and board of directors are committed to serving the older adults of Palo Pinto County, and for as long as we have voices we will continue thanking those of you who enable us to meet that goal.
