Senior Health Fair set for next weekend

By CHRIS AGEE

Local seniors are invited to a free health fair June 15, which will coincide with a flag retirement ceremony.

Organized by the VFW Post 2399, the event will take place at its post building, 1400 S.E. VFW Street in Mineral Wells.

According to Administrative Manager Jane’t Fisher, professionals in various disciplines will be available to assist the public and administer basic health procedures.

“Lee Downs, our service officer, will be available to let people know how to set up claims and make appointments so they can come back and see what claims there are for veterans,” she said.

A number of groups and organizations will be on hand to offer specialized information, Fisher said.

Serenity Estates will be providing dietary menus, Abbi Home Care will provide blood sugar checks and Mary Kay representative Rada Grimes has agreed to perform on-site pampering sessions.

Additional booths will be manned by representatives from IntegraCare, Palo Pinto Nursing Center, Mineral Wells Nursing and Rehab, Lakewell House, and 211 Texas.

According to Fisher, a VA counselor will be available to speak with veterans about post-traumatic stress disorder and other issues that might make them eligible for benefits. She recommended all veterans bring their DD214 separation papers to the event to speed up the process.

A number of other advocacy groups are expected to join the lineup, Fisher said, noting the flag retirement ceremony provides another reason to attend the event.

Attendees will have three opportunities – 3:30, 4:15, and 5 p.m. – to witness the official retirement of a flag.

“Citizens that come can either sit there and watch or participate and actually retire flags,” Fisher said.

Refreshments will be available and attendees will be eligible for door prizes throughout the afternoon. The event is set to last from 3:30 to 6 p.m.
