Ready for Some Fun!

— Makeovers are so much fun. Thanks to Tim Hopper at Mineral Wells Hardware, Uli Ffloweree of Walmart and Michael Franklin, president of our Board of Directors, the Senior Center pool room is sporting a brand new look. Not only did Tim donate paint for the walls, but his staff also did the painting for us. New signs, equipment and pool room décor have created a relaxing atmosphere, and Walmart manager Uli Ffloweree helped complete the project by contributing a flat-screen TV for the wall. Even those of us who don’t play pool are excited about the room’s attractive, updated look.

We tend toward exuberance here at the Senior Center. Every time our staff gets some good news we jump up and down and shout Hurrah! Lately we’ve had several occasions to clap and cheer as sponsor and vendor commitments come in for July’s Taste of Palo Pinto County fundraiser.

We are grateful to Diamond Pharmacy and First Financial Bank, both of which have pledged 5-Star sponsorships for the event. Dr. Saskia Vaughan of Four Seasons Dental will be sponsoring at a 3-Star level. We thank all these early supporters.

Holiday Hills Country Club was first in line as a Taste of Palo Pinto County vendor. We also have a commitment from the Hogg Pit BBQ. In addition to participating as a 2-Star Sponsor, Todd Hamilton will also be vending his “Todd Sauce” salsa. It looks like we’ll have some outstanding food again for this year’s extravaganza.

We really appreciate the businesses and individuals in our community who support our events and help keep us in business. We are already hard at work preparing for this year’s Taste of Palo Pinto County, which is shaping up to be one of our best fundraisers ever.

In the more immediate future, though, we’re coming up on our annual Gigantic Garage Sale next Friday and Saturday, March 14-15.  Our volunteers will start setting up on Monday, March 10 at the City Activities Center at 735 Hood Road in Fort Wolters. We have teams ready to pick up donations for the garage sale, so if you have items you’d like to give us just call the center at 940-325-6470 to schedule a time and place. We will accept donations through 4 p.m. Wednesday afternoon, March 12.

For those who would like to get a jump on some good deals, we’re having an Early Bird sale from 5-7 on Thursday evening, March 13.  For that sale only, admission will be $10 per person. The sales from 9-5 on Friday and 9-1 on Saturday will be free to the public.

This week marks the start of two new classes. Rosette Sutton is teaching crochet on Tuesday afternoons at 2, and I’ll be leading a beginning French class on Fridays at 1. Anyone is welcome to come join these or any of the other classes and activities we offer.

We’ve got some fun planned for St. Patrick’s Day on Monday, March 17. We’re looking for folks to participate in our Blarney Contest that will start at 11 a.m. If you have a Tall Tale to tell, we hope you’ll consider adding your name to the list. We’ll have first-, second- and third-place prizes for the winning whoppers. Keep in mind that the storytellers will have to finish within a five-minute limit.

At the Senior Center we’re always looking for an excuse to celebrate. Why not come on down and join in the fun.
