MINERAL WELLS — The Mineral Wells High School Rams certainly made the 2009-10 basketball season a memorable one. The team put together an amazing late-season run to reach the state playoffs for the first time in several years.
The Rams added a few more accolades to their story last week when the District 6-4A all-district teams were released. Five members of the MWHS squad were named to the three postseason squads, including two to the first-team.
Post Skyler Flaska and senior guard Kenyon Calcote were both selected by the district's coaches to the first-team roster after turning in stellar outings. Calcote led Mineral Wells in rebounds, steals, asists and finished the season as the team's second-leading scorer.
A junior, Flaska led the Rams offensively, and also keyed a stingy defense by leading the team in blocked shots.
Mineral Wells' Zach Nicklas was selected to the second-team all-district roster, while seniors Nick Tam and Phillip Hayes were named to the honorable mention squad.
"The way they played was big for us," said head coach David Breazeale. "I'm proud of them. I'm hoping they have helped us have a little taste (of the playoffs) and next year we'll get back in. The younger kids got to experience the excitement, and know what it is like."
