MINERAL WELLS — High School basketball season isn't quite finished in the Mineral Wells High School area just yet. It's almost time for the all-stars to take their shot in the Mineral Wells Area Chamber of Commerce - Chicken Express All-Star Basketball Classic.
The annual event – which will be held on March 27 in the Mineral Wells High School gym – will showcase a larger group of athletes from throughout northcentral Texas. This season, organizers have expanded the list of schools eligible to send athletes to more than 60.
"We expect to see a larger than ever crowd as we have expanded the invitations to include 24 counties, and expanded the scouting list to include 60 colleges and universities," said Ninfa Holly, the chamber's assistant director of tourism and special events. "
Fans will still get the chance to see some of the area's top athletes. Among the local athletes set to play in the girls' game are Millsap's Ashton Waters, Mineral Wells' Megan Hart, Gordon's Kylah Procter, Santo's Becca Jones, Brock's Kenisha Harris and Strawn's Jamie Heflin.
Procter, Jones and Heflin helped lead their teams to the state playoffs this season. Harris was a member of the Brock team that recently won its second straight Class A state title.
Among the area boys selected to compete in the game are Brock's Gage Baker, Graford's Colby Green, Peaster's Clayton Brown and Tyler Petermeier, Millsap's Aaron Evans and Santo's John David Montgomery.
The girls' all-star basketball game will start at 6 p.m. The boys' all-star tilt will tip off at 8 p.m.
