Warriors steamroll Joshua, 58-12

JOSHUA – Daniel Hollingsworth moved a little closer to the top spot on the Mineral Wells Community Christian Warriors' rushing list Friday night.

Actually, he moved a lot closer.

The MWCCS junior rushed for 318 yards and six touchdowns in the first half of play and led the Warriors to a convincing 58-12 win over Joshua Christian.

With the win, CCS improved to 6-0 for the season and, more importantly, grabbed a big win in their Texas Christian Athletic Federation district opener.

The second-leading rusher in school history, Hollingsworth got the Community Christian offense in gear early. He took a pitch from freshman quarterback Cole Van Kirk on the Warriors' first play from scrimmage and raced for a touchdown.

Hollingsworth struck again seconds later. After Isaiah Brazeal had recovered CCS' ensuing onside kick attempt, Community Christian head coach Bryan Horton called Hollingsworth's number again – resulting in a second touchdown.

Joshua Christian managed to scratch out a touchdown moments later to cut the Warriors' lead to 16-6 before Isaac Brazeal delivered some highlights of his own. The CCS standout returned Joshua's ensuing kick the distance for a 23-6 first-quarter lead.

Hollingsworth went back to work from there. He scored twice early in the second quarter – one via a 77-yard run – to build the Warrior cushion to 42-6.

He notched his fifth and six scores late in the first half to enforce the six-man 45-point mercy rule.

Isaiah Brazeal starred defensively. In addition to his kick off recovery, he picked off a pass and recovered a Joshua fumble.

Caleb Brazeal also scored for the Warriors.

  • FB Gordon at Strawn b8.jpg FWIW: Good, clean hate – Ranking the area's best rivalry games of the 2014 football season

    By CLINT FOSTER

Football season is fast approaching and with it those glorious games between teams that love to hate each other, which we call rivalries.

I'm speaking, of course, about sports hate – the only beautiful kind. It's the stuff built on history and tradition that inspires simply the fiercest and most entertaining games of every season.

Palo Pinto County and the surrounding area have no shortage of fierce football rivalries.

The University Interscholastic League's realignment often causes new rivalries to be born and old ones to be rekindled. But which rivalries are the area's very best for 2014? The one's you circle your calendar for and make sure you don't miss.

I can think of at least 10.

So, for what it's worth, here's my list of the area's best, can't-miss football rivalries of the upcoming 2014 season.

  • FWIW logo.jpg FWIW: Don't panic over the Texas Rangers' rotation

The British government's World War II era phrase, "Keep calm and carry on," has grown somewhat cliche after it's recent re-popularization and superfluous parodies. But, for what it's worth, there may not be a better motto for Texas Rangers fans to utter to themselves as we enter the unknown landscape that is the 2014 Rangers' season.

The Texas Rangers were desperately in need of a boost.
