I’m too old to be stumbling through life

“…I am too old to cry, but it hurts too much to laugh…” – from a story often told by Abraham Lincoln when he had difficulties in his life. (Adlai Stevenson’s reply to reporters when asked about his feelings in losing the presidential election in Nov., 1942).

And so we have an ongoing story of loss and hurt. This past week, I lost my balance and hurt myself, my dignity and my glasses.

Every morning, before it gets too hot to be doing things out in the yard, I have been slowly and surely moving a large supply of firewood from an area in the backyard into a covered “carport” near our back door. There were a number of reasons for my self-assigned “chore.” I suppose the first one was simply to get some exercise and maybe some strengthening for my aging body to help recovery from being almost inert all summer.
