My granddaddy taught me that you pay your debts owed, whether you can afford it or not. I am not sure that he would have been talking to me in an advisory tone, or if he just impressed on my innocent childhood by his overt example.
I was impressed with his methods of payment, even when I didn’t know the importance of his convictions, nor the size of his debts compared to his ability to pay them. The gist of the impression was the fact that indebtedness was a normal condition of life during the existing 1930s economic depression; and it seems to have returned – uninvited – to us today.
