GRAHAM – More than a year after she was reported missing from her grandparents' home in Graham, police reported an arrest of a man believed to be responsible for Candice Shields' disappearance.
The 20-year-old mother of one was three months pregnant with her second child when she disappeared.
Department of Public Safety Public Information Officer Tony Fulton held a press conference Tuesday afternoon during which he reported Jeremy Paul Thornburg, 24, of Sweetwater, was arrested and faces a murder charge in the case.
As of Tuesday afternoon, Graham police reported he is being held under $750,000 bond at Young County Jail.
GPD reports indicate Thornburg had a personal relationship with Shields and was considered a person of interest throughout a joint investigation by the Texas Rangers and Graham Police Department.
According to information provided by Graham police, investigators determined Thornburg went to Graham and met Shields at her residence on the day she was last seen. Police reported she left with Thornburg early on the morning of Dec. 11, 2011.
Shields was reported missing four days later, by her mother, Michelle Quillin, who travelled from her home in San Antonio to Graham to file the report.
Graham police told the Index on multiple occasions they had no evidence of foul play.
Shortly after the incident became public, several individuals reportedly saw Shields in Mineral Wells, though Quillin said at the time the reports were likely a case of mistaken identity.
"We have gotten a call from a woman that lives in Mineral Wells that has a friend that lives in Mineral Wells and said that she looks almost identical to Candace," she said.
The case is still under investigation and further developments will be reported to the Young County District Attorney's Office.
