Local businesses and individuals are preparing to bring a charitable motorcycle ride to Mineral Wells this weekend, one year after the event’s origin in Denton.

According to “Coats for Kids Ride” coordinator Stephanie White, Greg Sawko, partial owner of Fuzzy’s Taco Shop, informed her of the opportunity.

“I met him and he told me about the event,” she said. “It just kind of went from there.”

In addition to Fuzzy’s, White said the ride has attracted support from several local retailers and organizations including Smitty’s Cycles, United Way of Palo Pinto County, employees of Palo Pinto General Hospital, PecoFacet, Blazin’ 7’s Farmw, Progressive Waste Solutions, Kinder Equipment Co. and Ducks Unlimited.

The event’s purpose is to provide local children between 5 and 12 years old with brand-new coats for the winter. Individuals interested in taking part in the 17-mile ride can show up with a coat and a motorcycle Sunday at Smitty’s Cycles, 3805 U.S. Highway 180 East.

Riders will depart from Smitty’s at 2:30 p.m. and ultimately arrive at Fuzzy’s Taco Shop. Participants will be able to participate in raffle drawings at the downtown restaurant after the ride.

“The coats are going to stay in Mineral Wells and if we have as good a turnout as I’m hoping, [additional coats] will go to the county,” White said.

She explained several companies have supported the event with monetary donations, which will be used to purchase coats in sizes not donated by riders.

“That’s not what it was for, but there are some companies that it’s easier for them to donate money,” she added.

For those unable to attend the ride who would like to donate a coat to the charity, White said Fuzzy’s, Smitty’s and Best Western are accepting new coat donations during regular business hours.
