Hell’s Gate fireworks on for the 6th

— BY TONY EIERDAM

Nothing says Fourth of July better than a fireworks show, even if the show is not until July 6.

Folks in Mineral Wells, Palo Pinto County and the surrounding area will once again have the opportunity to enjoy a fireworks display at Possum Kingdom Lake.

The public can celebrate Independence Day with "Fireworks at Hell's Gate." The 26th annual event, put on by the Possum Kingdom Chamber of Commerce, will be Saturday, July 6. Gates will open at 6:30 p.m. and close at 8:45 p.m. The show, which will end at 10 p.m., can be viewed at YMCA Camp Grady Spruce at Possum Kingdom Lake, the only land option for patrons desiring to enjoy the fireworks show.

Cost is $5 per person, and children 3-years-old and under get in free. There are no pets or alcohol allowed.

"It is a beautiful place to see an outstanding fireworks show," PKCoC Executive Director Gayla Chambers said. "It will be a beautiful show, great family entertainment, and we will also have a bounce house and other entertainment available for the kids along with concessions."

Premium and private seating can be purchased. Call (940) 779-2424 for pricing, locations and availability.

Another feature at the annual event will include the "Wildlife on the Move" show by Eric Bittingham.

Bittingham will present various animals in an entertaining, exciting and educational way. Participants learn about and can actually come into contact with different creatures, such as tarantulas, large insects, alligators, lizards, snakes, tortoises, hedgehogs, etc. Bittingham will also examine each critter's role in nature.

"Eric has been doing this show for us for years," Chambers said. "He has been educating kids about the world of nature for many years."

The event will also have swimming (and inflatables), and family cabins are available by calling Nevin McCoy at (940) 682-6277. Access www.campgradyspruce.org for more details.
