The sky was gray but it did not keep a few faithful citizens from gathering at Woodland Park Cemetery in Mineral Wells for a Memorial Day Ceremony, sponsored by the local American Legion Post 75.

This traditional ceremony was conducted by Post 75 Commander Donald Christy.

Commander Christy opened the ceremony with greetings and recognition of a special guest, Marine Sgt. Pettit, who is on temporary duty in the area from Camp La June.

On hand were the American Legion Riders.  This group has been formed a little over a year but have been very active in support of the Legion programs and of area groups such as the National Vietnam War Museum and the Medal of Honor project.

Commander Christy spoke about the history of Memorial Day and added his personal thoughts about why we should remember our past veterans and the present members of our military who put their lives on the line daily to preserve the freedoms the veterans from the past may have  died for.

He emphasized it was the responsibility of each veteran to share stories with the family so they can pass those down to future generations, citing his own father’s stories from Navy days as an example.

Upon conclusion of his remarks, Commander Christy led the group in observing the raising of flag and laying of wreath at the base of the flag.

American Legion Auxiliary President Linda Choate assisted in the wreath laying followed by taps provided by Legion member Kyle Wilson.

Attendees met at the American Legion hall for a lunch provided by the American Legion family: American Legion, Sons of the Legion, and American Legion Auxiliary.
