Grand Jury indicts Morado, seven others

Mineral Wells Index

PALO PINTO – A Palo Pinto County Grand Jury served up 10 indictments to eight individuals at the Palo Pinto County Courthouse, Thursday morning.

Among those indicted was Julian Morado, 38, who was arrested for intoxication manslaughter after striking and killing Alton Alexander and his horse on U.S. Highway 180 in July.

As the Index reported on July 25, Alexander, 61, was riding his horse, Swigs, and flagging traffic on 180 west of Mineral wells next to a mule-pulled covered wagon full of friends and family on a Saturday night.

Alexander and his friends frequently made such trail rides for fun without incident.

According to eyewitnesses, an allegedly intoxicated Morado came barreling down the highway in his 2002 Mazda Tribute SUV and hit Alexander from behind, throwing him off of Swigs. The accident was a hit-and-run.

Alexander was flown by Air Evac Lifeteam to John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth, where he was pronounced dead later that night.

His horse, Swigs, died that night as well, and was buried on the side of the road.

Texas Department of Public Safety officers arrested Morado later that week for intoxication manslaughter with a vehicle (which he was indicted for) as well as driving with an invalid license and failure to stop after an accident and render aid. Two of those charges were felonies.

Morado, also known as “Flacco,” was held on bond at Palo Pinto County Jail for a total of $82,500.

Also indicted was Taylor Wade Garrett who received three indictments for burglary of a building, evading arrest with a vehicle and theft of a firearm in connection with an incident in late July.

As the Index reported, Garrett, 20, led Palo Pinto County Sheriff’s deputies on a late-night, high-speed chase after burglarizing a ranch on Fortune Bend Road. PPSO found Garret’s vehicle on U.S. Highway 281 South, between Santo and Lipan, and chased him north, up Farm-to-Market Road 4 and west along Interstate 20 on the north service road.

PPSO said Garrett often drove in the east-bound lane of traffic and reached speeds of 90 to 105 mph throughout the pursuit.

Garrett crashed through a fence and into a pasture between I-20 mile markers 373 and 372 and escaped on foot into the woods along with others in the car.

Garrett was arrested in Santo the following day along with Daniel Wayne Brune, who was also in the car. Brune, 26, was also indicted Thursday for burglary of a building.

The following were also indicted:

• Keith Dewayne Clark – forgery.

• Johnny Eugene Davis Sr. – injury to a child.

• Sara Koreen Wilson – credit card abuse/elderly.

• John Wayne Ford – organized retail theft.

• Nathan Levi Mathews – injury to a child.
