An annual fixture at Mineral Wells High School for over eight decades, Coronation, which takes place this Saturday, is deep in tradition, according to MWHS's Donna Parker. And it all started with just a queen.

In the early years of coronation students selected a queen through “votes,” by putting a penny in the jar of the queen nominee of choice, Parker explained.

“The young lady with the most pennies became the queen,” she said, adding that the queen then selected her king.

Today, the king and queen, both seniors, are elected with ballots. In addition to this royal pair, the royal court includes underclassmen, who are next in line in honorary title.

“Over the years a 'Court of Beauty' was also added to our honored students to showcase the most beautiful students – both inside beauty as well as outside beauty,” said Parker. “All of these selections are made by popular vote.”

“Our campus organizations and sports groups also take part by sending a girl and boy representative to be introduced at the ceremony,” she said of Saturday's big event. “Also, elected class officers and personalities are allowed to participate, as well.”

After crowning the king and queen, Parker said, “the best of our talented students honor our king and queen with gifts of song and dance.”

The MWHS Royal Ball is held following the ceremony to celebrate the crowning.

“It is our goal at Mineral Wells High School to provide the opportunity for students to experience an elegant, formal occasion and, therefore, improve the social skills that are necessary for our world today,”

Parker added. “This will be the 87th Annual Coronation – a decades-old tradition that still continues in this modern day.”
