Dentists with the Texas Department of State Health Services have been in the process of providing Mineral Wells ISD students with free dental screenings.

To date, dentists have examined students’ pearly whites at Travis and Houston elementary schools. They will visit Lamar Elementary the week of Feb. 11, according to MWISD Lead Nurse Wanda Voelcker.

The oral health program is made available to MWISD students through a state grant and is available for any child with a signed, completed permission form, Voelcker said.

“Licensed dentists, working for the DSHS, will examine the child’s teeth to determine of there is decay or other problems,” she explained, adding that the information is then sent home in a letter to each child’s parent.

If a child has an issue and qualifies for sealants, the state provides the service free of charge, Voelcker said.

“Dental health affects their overall health, which affects their ability to learn in school,” she said of MWISD students. “The school district is working with the state to provide these free services to children in our community.”
