PALO PINTO COUNTY– Possum Kingdom residents saw a couple of small grass fires ignite on Saturday around the Harbour on the east side of the lake, rounding out an Independence Day holiday week that saw several fires.
Palo Pinto County Fire Marshal Buddy Harwell said the fires were small and easily controlled. He attributed the likely cause to fireworks. He added that the two PK blazes bring the grand total to 14 fires, including one structure fire in Strawn, since the Metcalf Ranch fire that scorched 40-acres last Wednesday afternoon.
Of the 14 reported fires, Harwell maintains that the vast majority were fireworks-related. This includes the Metcalf Ranch fire, which is believed to have been caused by people shooting fireworks out of canoes on the neighboring Brazos River.
Mineral Wells State Park also reported a large grass fire near Maddux road, north of U.S. Highway 180, on Friday. The flames cleared a large portion of shrubs and trees and damaged part of the park’s trailway before it was tamed by members of the Mineral Wells Volunteer Fire Department.
