Mineral Wells has it’s share of classic car shows with the show at Clark Gardens every spring and the Crazy Cruise to kick off the Crazy Water Festival in October.

But starting this weekend, a new car show will roll into town and add to the list of showcases for vintage automobiles.

Lakewell House is hosting its inaugural classic car show and competition Saturday from noon to 3 p.m. with an open invitation to the entire community to either bring their cars to show off or simply stop by and view the hottest wheels in Mineral Wells.

And whether you show a car or simply want to look around, the event is totally free with hot dogs and refreshments on hand, courtesy of Lakewell House.

Lakewell House Resident Sales Manager Denise Castillo said all car owners have to do is show up to the Lakewell House parking lot on 3005 NE 2nd St. at noon and they’ll “get the party started.”

She said a first prize trophy for the best car will be awarded based on a popular vote.

Castillo said she started the project with a hope that it would bring the entire community together.

“It’s just something that young and old enjoy,” she said of classic cars. “I love seeing classic cars go down the road. People who actually had classic cars like that growing up love to see them out on the street. It’s just something we can do to bring the entire community together in one place.

“We’ve got to get out there and meet people in our community and come together as a community, because the more we come together, the more soul we’ll have as a community. That’s a big part of Lakewell House.”

Castillo said one resident at the retirement home has a son that plans to bring 10 classic cars to the show. She hopes that even more from around the area will come and make the event as big as possible.

This is the first of many events coming up in the next few weeks that Castillo is spearheading, including a senior center benefit next weekend and more in February.

Castillo said she is currently seeking silent auction items for the benefit to raise money for the senior center.
