A community service group known as GALS, or Girls Aspiring to Lead through Service, will join forces this Christmas season for a traditional Meals on Wheels of Palo Pinto County program.

Leann Johnson, who founded the local group with Sharon Garcia, said the high school freshmen identified MOWPPC as a positive partner for community outreach.

“They wanted to do a service project with the elderly,” Johnson said. They contacted MOWPPC Executive Director Misty Clark about volunteering.

“We wanted to do an Angel Tree for seniors,” Johnson noted. “What [Clark] did was take the holiday wish list and just sent us information.”

Meals on Wheels has promoted a client Christmas wish list for the past several years, and Johnson said the GALS project will help spread the word about a worthwhile opportunity to help the needy.

Johnson said with the GALS’ involvement the program will get more community exposure.

“We are going to put those trees up at several places,” she said.

As with Angel Trees, items from the wish list will be hung on branches. Anyone willing to purchase an item can do so, leaving it at the store for pick up.

“We’ll go back and wrap those gifts,” she said, and GALS volunteers will assist MOWPPC in distributing the gifts next month.

Johnson said the first tree will be going up at Titan Bank within a few days, hopefully followed by several other area businesses.

Meals on Wheels staff said the organization is thankful for the added help. Anyone wanting to give can find a list of requested items online by visiting mowppc.com or by calling (940) 325-7919.
