Skies to go ‘boom’ Thursday evening

Once again Ram Stadium will play host to the Mineral Wells Independence Day fireworks' display, on Thursday. And, for the second year, the event includes a lot more than the Chicken Express-sponsored pyrotechnics.

Community fair

Pray Mineral Wells and the Mineral Wells Police Department will team up to bring the Second Annual Community Crime and Safety Fair, beginning at 5 p.m., in the Mineral Wells High School parking lot, east of Ram Stadium.

This entirely free-to-the-public fair will give citizens a chance to enjoy activities, entertainers and representatives from area churches, ministries and non-profit groups. Pray Mineral Wells will have a concert, with eight acts playing until 7:30 p.m.

In addition, many churches and businesses will sponsor activities, such as:

• Face painting.

• Bounce house.

• Dunking booth.

• Pet adoptions from the Mineral Wells Animal Shelter and Palo Pinto County Humane Society.

• Operation Kidsafe (a children's digital identification program), courtesy of Ram Country.

• Drinking water booth, courtesy of First Financial Bank.

In addition, there will be fire trucks, ambulances, police and sheriff's vehicles and information on crime prevention and safety tips. The MWPD will have free safety programs, including “ReportIt” and bike engraving, according to Mineral Wells Police Chief Dean Sullivan.

Sullivan wants to remind those coming to the MWHS campus to see fireworks that this is school property, therefore any alcoholic beverages are prohibited. He added that officers will patrol and assist with parking.

Fireworks show

The big Independence Day pyrotechnics show, hosted by Chicken Express, begins shortly after dark. This year, Chicken Express celebrates its 25th year of business and the owners want everyone to know they are invited to watch the free show.

At 8 p.m. spectators will be allowed to find a seat in the east-side stadium bleachers for the fireworks' show.

The field, west-side bleachers and the parking lot on the west side of the stadium will be closed.

For comfort, bring a blanket or chairs (the bleachers are hot) and plenty of water, Sullivan advised.
