New Lamar plans unveiled at trustees’ meeting

The concept for the new Lamar Elementary school building is beginning to take shape.

The Mineral Wells ISD Board of Trustees approved the schematic design for the replacement elementary at a regular meeting of the School Board, Tuesday night, when representatives from VLK Architects unveiled a fully-rendered digital model to the public, complete with a fly-through animation.

The design, which Superintendent Dr. Gail Haterius described as “classic contemporary,” should fit well into the neighborhood on the site were the old elementary has stood since 1955.

“It’s an exciting design,” Haterius said. “I think that (VLK) was responsive to the way our teachers want to teach our children.”

VLK Principal Sloan Harris was on hand for the presentation as well as architect Ross E. Rivers, Project Designer Will Faber and designer Erjon Troqe.

“(The School Board spent) their time to make sure that the school serves students and faculty well and also is a great addition to the neighborhood,” Harris said.

Harris said one unique aspect of Lamar’s new design is the presence of what he called “collaboration areas both inside the school for project-based learning as well as outdoor collaboration areas for outdoor learning activities.”

Haterius also described the plans as having “lots of light” and color to go along with flexible spaces and inclosed, safer hallways.

VLK Architects have played a role in this project for some time, as Harris said they did a long-range facility plan for the school district last year.

This forecast and prioritization of the district’s needs – in partnership with a planning committee made up of community leaders – led the school board to include the new elementary school as a headliner in the bond.

In other business, trustees approved:

• Two date changes for board meetings in March and July. The March 11 meeting was moved to March 25, while the July 8 meeting was moved to July 15.

• A School Board election set for May 10.

• Contract for election services between the Palo Pinto County Elections Administrator’s Office and MWISD.

• Amendment to deed restrictions for Paul Lawrence Dunbar Community Group, Inc.

• Administrator Contracts.
