Reddell gives review for Woman’s Club

Mineral Wells Index

— At the Mineral Wells Woman’s Club meeting, on Oct. 2, Wanda Reddell gave a book review of “All Over But the Shoutin,’” written by Rick Bragg.

Bragg was raised by his mother in an impoverished area of northeastern Alabama, but went on to write for the New York Times and receive awards for his writings.

”Anyone could tell it, anyone who had a momma who went 18 years without a new dress so that her sons could have school clothes, who picked cotton in other people’s fields and ironed other people’s clothes and cleaned the mess in other people’s houses so that her children didn’t have to live on welfare alone...” Reddell shared from Bragg’s book.

She said Bragg continued to praise his mother for all the sacrifices she made for him.

For the lunch meeting at the Woman’s Club building, Shirley Ellis served as food chair and assisted with decorations, while Pat Harrington designed the displays and table favors and decorations to carry out the theme of this month’s program.

November meeting

The next Woman’s Club meeting will be Nov. 6, in which Keri Walden  Dobbs will inform participants about legal matters related to women. This will be a potluck lunch, so bring a favorite dish and, if willing, add the recipe for our upcoming Woman’s Club recipe. The club is looking for recipes that have an interesting stories behind them, such as a grandmother’s recipe or recipe served over the years as a favorite – be sure to add this story to your recipe.

Don’t forget, the Woman’s Club will have a bake-sale booth at the Crazy Water Festival this Saturday.

See you there.
