Mineral Wells woman's body discovered by son in freezer

By LIBBY CLUETT

After receiving a call at 6:28 p.m. Thursday, Mineral Wells Police Department officers went to a home in the 1400 block of S.E. 19th Street where a young man had “discovered his mother’s body inside the freezer,” according to Police Chief Dean Sullivan.

Police confirmed the report, separated the witnesses – possibly two males and a female – and secured the scene, Sullivan said. Meanwhile, he said, “detectives prepared and secured a search warrant to give us the legal authority to go in and search.”

When the Index went to the home around 9:30 p.m. Thursday night, the house was taped off and police were posted at all corners of the yard. Also assisting MWPD on the scene were members of the Texas Department of Public Safety, Texas Ranger Tony Bradford and District Attorney Mike Burns. Sullivan said Precinct 5 Justice of the Peace Bobby Hart pronounced the woman’s body deceased.

He said Bradford and MWPD detectives conducted a crime-scene process and transferred the woman’s body to Dallas for autopsy.

“We’re treating this as a homicide, but it’s too soon to speculate [and rule out] an accident,” Sullivan explained, describing the freezer where the woman’s body was found by her son as a large, chest-type freezer. “We treat [situations like this] as homicides until we get some clear and compelling evidence otherwise.”

“We are continuing to interview family and neighbors to reconstruct the events,” he added.

When asked by the Index, Sullivan said there was no “immediately determinable” cause of death, so they will await the autopsy report. Sullivan said they have made no arrests.

Police left the scene around 4 a.m. Friday.

The Index will continue to follow up on this story as more details come forth.
