PALO PINTO – It gets bigger every year. There are so many displays and lights it practically creates a nighttime glow west of Mineral Wells.
The family of David Lee has once again filled their yard – and with permission some of a neighboring property – with Christmas decorations. Hundreds of them, involving thousands and thousands of lights.
“It is a labor of love,” said daughter Licia Lee, who said the elaborate display takes about three weeks to set up.
David Lee has a special meter box set up to handle the heavy holiday load. He has five 240-volt cords that break off into dozens of other extension cords to accommodate the displays of all kinds and sizes.
A circular driveway off U.S. Highway 180 West (use the west entrance) allows passersby to drive through the display.
“We’ve seen people leave and pullover and everyone get and switch sides and come back through so they can see everything,” Licia Lee said.
David Lee said it started years ago as a modest display and has been added to each year. He said once his daughter got involved, it has practically taken a life of its own.
When jokingly suggested they might have to start charging people, Lee said, “Oh no. That won’t fly around here.”
So if you want to see one massive Christmas display, head west on U.S. 180 about a mile past the Brazos River bridge and look for the display on your left. It will be hard to miss, and they will leave the lights on for you till about 11 p.m.
