From staff reports
The Mineral Wells Women’s Bowling Alliance is having a Women’s Bowlers Roundup on Sunday, Aug 4, 2-4 p.m. at Mountaineer Lanes.
The roundup includes coaching tips, refreshments, a free game of bowling and league information for any women interested in joining a league. Join the MWBA to meet women who bowl in the area, learn about state and national tournaments and travel leagues.
Sponsors for the event are Mountaineer Lanes and RJ’s Pro Shop.
Bowlers range in age from 18 to 90.
“Lasting friendships are made at Mountaineer Lanes,” said Lynn Bloodworth.
Bloodworth encourages anyone interested to join and said individuals “do not have to be good to bowl here” and, she added that bowlers get a handicap based on their averages. “You don’t have to be pro to bowl with us.”
The average cost per league night is $13. Bowling starts with practice at 6:15 p.m. and bowling starting at 6:30 p.m.
The evening league will start bowling on the first Monday after Labor Day, Sept. 9.
“Mountaineer lanes has a large selection of house balls and shoes are free to use during league bowling,” Bloodworth said.
“When I first started, I bought a used ball from one of the girls for $15. I used it for my first couple of years,” she recalled.
“Monday business women’s is a five-person team, with the option of six to rotate or just cover when someone is out,” Bloodworth explained, adding, “You must join U.S. Bowling Congress as we must be governed by their standardized rules and regulations to keep it fair for everyone.”
Bloodworth said the USBC dues are $21 per year.
“You have the option to bowl in tournaments on the local state and national level – we call this girls trip!,” she said. “State tournaments have taken us to Austin, San Antonio, Houston, Dallas, Fort Worth and several other metroplex locations. Next summer we head to Lubbock for state fun.”
