‘Friends’ group keen on the Baker Hotel

From staff reports

At the latest meeting of the Palo Pinto County Republican Party, Friends of The Baker Treasurer Beth Henary Watson informed the 80-plus attendees of the “get-out-the-vote” effort in support of the Baker Hotel.

Watson explained that Friends of The Baker formed in early February to back a City of Mineral Wells sales-tax reallocation election, planned for May 10. The city proposes taking 1/8 cent of the existing 1.5-cent sales tax it collects and funneling it to an economic development fund.

If the May 10 election is successful, sales-tax dollars collected for economic development could be used to service debt on bonds issued to support revitalization of the Baker Hotel. Dollars collected in excess of those pledged to the Baker could fund other community development projects, Watson explained.

Watson said volunteers and donors have lined up to support Friends of The Baker and stated that the group's goal is not just to pass the measure, but to have it pass overwhelmingly.

For those who want to help the effort, Friends of The Baker has two volunteer days planned:

• Thursday, March 27, 6-8 p.m., is a mail labeling effort, which takes place at Holiday Hills Country Club. To volunteer, just show up.

• On Monday, April 28, 7:30-8:30 a.m., the Friends will have an early-voting kickoff event. More information about this event will be forthcoming.
