County commissioners voted this week to approve a contract with a company tasked with updating the courthouse’s electrical system.
The vote authorized County Judge David Nicklas to sign a contract with Level 5 Design Group, which pitched the plan to commissioners in March.
During the earlier meeting, representative Justin Gilmore described previous discussions with two commissioners and detailed his firm’s recommendations, which include adding an emergency generator backup system to the building.
Furthermore, Gilmore said the project would be broken into two phases with the first dedicated to choosing a qualified contractor to conduct an analysis to determine the courthouse’s specific electrical needs. Those services must be contracted based on qualifications rather than price, he explained, noting fees can be negotiated later and commissioners can reject any quote they feel is unreasonable.
Fire funds earmarked for vehicle purchase
Palo Pinto County Sheriff Ira Mercer said his department is in need of a new vehicle in the near future.
“We really need five,” he explained, though he recommended advertising for bids to purchase one pickup truck this fiscal year using money the PPSO received after recent fires.
“My proposal is to buy one of the vehicles ... out of that money this year, which will help us with next year’s budget,” he said.
He said he favored advertising for bids instead of purchasing from a dealership because he wants to allow for a possible trade for the vehicle being replaced.
Commissioners supported Mercer’s proposal unanimously and bids are set to open July 27.
Donations provide for mobile drug dog kennel
Commissioners also approved another purchase for the PPSO Tuesday following a brief summary by Mercer.
In order to better care for the county drug dog, he said two area residents recently provided funding for an automobile kennel.
