Ride of Silence tonight

Mineral Wells Index

— The local observance of the 10th annual Ride of Silence takes place tonight. Riders will begin at 7 p.m. at Palo Pinto General Hospital.

Each year riders across the nation ride for one hour in complete silence, beginning at 7 p.m., in honor of individuals injured or killed while cycling.

This year’s local ride will take an even more somber tone tonight, in light of two resident cyclists killed since the last ride  Iris Stagner, who organized the Ride of Silence for the past several years and was killed while riding her bike along U.S. Highway 180 West in September, and David Valtier, who was hit and killed by a motorist as he cycled home from work last July.

Tonight’s ride will take riders from the hospital to Mesquite Pit and back again, traveling at a slow pace, which makes the ride appropriate for cyclists of all experience levels.

Helmets are required to participate but anyone interested is welcome to ride. Riders should gather at PPGH at least 30 minutes prior to starting time.
