Weekend icing sets record, causes rollovers

By CLINT FOSTER

Will winter ever end?

After an unusually icy last four months, it seemed as though spring had finally arrived as North Texans enjoyed a sunny Saturday with a high of 82 degrees. But not 24 hours later, locals celebrated Texas Independence Day with chilling 20-mph winds and sleet. Just another wild weekend of Texas weather.

Temperatures plummeted to as low as 16 degrees Sunday, setting yet another new record low.

Although much of the ice had disappeared from the roads by Monday, many area school districts saw closings and delays. Mineral Wells ISD delayed school for two hours, as did Community Christian School.

Perrin-Whitt ISD began classes at 10 a.m. with buses delayed, while Millsap ISD gave its students and faculty the entire day off.

The Mineral Wells area saw two wrecks Sunday, both of which were rollovers on US Highway 281. The first occurred just before 4 a.m. in the 7000 block of 281 South. Mineral Wells Emergency Medical Services said this accident resulted in the transport of one individual by Air Evac to an unspecified Fort Worth hospital.

The second accident, just after 5 p.m., was in the 3800 block of 281 North. This rollover, however, did not result in transport to a hospital.

Mineral Wells Public Works Director Kelly Jones said his city crews sanded a few roads and set up barricades in various areas, but overall the ice was not as serious as it has been in the recent past.

"It wasn't too bad," he said. "We got out (Sunday) and put out some barricades and checked a few spots. (Monday) morning, we went ahead and sanded around Palo Pinto General Hospital and on NE 23 Street and NW 4th Avenue."

Jones said his crews put out barricades on all of the city roads with hills or steep slopes that might be problematic in the slick ice. He said the barricaded roads included NE 23rd Street, Farm-to-Market Road 1821, SE 19th-22nd Streets, NW and NE 10th Street, Travis and Mesquite street.
