Kristy Ann Napps' firstborn child entered the world at an opportune time, making him Palo Pinto General Hospital's first birth of the year.

Born at 6:11 p.m. Wednesday, Nethaniel Adam Curtis was 20.5 inches long and weighed 7 pounds, 12 ounces at birth.

Napps told the Index her son arrived on schedule, noting Wednesday was her due date.

An expected birth shortly after New Year's Day led her to entertain the possibility of delivering the county's first birth of the year, though she later assumed she would miss the opportunity.

"I was hoping," she explained. "After New Year's, I figured someone had one already."

She said she arrived at PPGH around 5 a.m. Wednesday and did not experience any complications. She was resting comfortably Thursday afternoon in her hospital room, joined by Nethaniel's proud father, Andrew Curtis, and family.

The couple shared their joy with the Index and expressed gratitude for the many kind gestures offered by the community.

To celebrate the arrival of 2013's New Year's baby, PPGH is providing a case of formula and a case of diapers to the parents. Additionally, the hospital auxiliary prepared a diaper bag filled with supplies.

Other local retailers joined in the celebration, offering a variety of helpful gifts to the couple.

First Financial Bank is issuing Nethaniel a $100 savings bond, and both Walmart and Mesquite Pit are donating $50 gift certificates.

El Paseo and Basic Necessities are also giving the family gift certificates, while Bealls is providing a selection of blankets and socks.

Napps said the generosity of local businesses will help greatly in the months to come.

"We've got a lot of good stuff so far," she said.
