The Mineral Wells Senior Center's 2013 Senior Expo went off without a hitch last Friday as 133 people registered for the free fair offering complimentary health screenings, workshops, food and a variety of exhibits.
Senior Center Executive Director Vivian Conrad said she was "very pleased" with the results of this year's expo. She added that three exhibitors told her it was "the best organized health fair they'd ever participated in."
"It went very well," Conrad said. "We've gotten a lot of feedback from the seniors who said it was very helpful, informative and provided a great service. That was our goal."
Conrad said the event – sponsored by Renew Home Health – featured 32 exhibitors and boasted an average of 12 to 25 people in each workshop. Over 70 attendees received flu shots while Wal Mart offered vision screenings and Dr. Terri Edwards from New Sound Solutions provided hearing screenings for a line of people that Conrad said stretched outside the door during the whole event.
The fair itself took place at First Baptist Church, to whom Conrad said she was very grateful for allowing the senior center to use the space.
Across the street at the senior center, Mesquite Pit, Wal Mart and Chick-fil-a of Weatherford provided meals throughout the day. Conrad said 77 people were fed at breakfast and an additional 97 at lunch.
Adding to the fair were 19 occupational therapy assistants from Weatherford College and two of their teachers who all volunteered to help with the event.
"They did everything from running the registration table to helping guide people around, and they had their own table, too," Conrad said. "They were just wonderful and helped us so much."
Conrad added that her staff was able to correct some of the difficulties the fair faced last year, allowing the event to run even more smoothly.
The next big event the Senior Center is gearing up for is their trip to Winstar Casino on Wednesday, Oct. 16. A $20 cover will reserve your seat on the bus and include bus fare, a free senior breakfast and $20 of casino playing credit. The bus only holds 55 seniors, so those interested should call 940-325-6470 to save their spot on
