Cancer survivor dinner set Friday

For anyone in the county or area who has heard the phrase, “You have cancer,” Relay for Life extends an invitation to join the organization and cancer survivors Friday at a free Survivor Dinner.

Three local cancer survivors, Christy Graham, Maria DeSantiago and Lanelle Davis, lead the Palo Pinto County Relay for Life Survivorship Committee. They want cancer survivors to bring one guest – it's free for the guest, too – and enjoy an evening of food, goodies and entertainment, 6:30-8:30 p.m., at the Palo Pinto County Sheriff’s Posse building.

Davis said their theme, like the American Cancer Society's, is celebratory – “Celebrating more birthdays.”

She said the Posse has donated the venue, Mesquite Pit the barbeque, and area individuals and businesses have contributed door prizes.

Graham, Davis and DeSantiago have been busy collecting some of the door prizes, and say they have a substantial inventory.

Davis, quoting statistics from Relay for Life, said 3.5 percent of the people in an area have had cancer. She added that, locally, this would mean that between 900 and 1,000 people have it.

“If you have ever heard the words, 'You have cancer,' then this party is for you [and one guest],” she said, adding that it doesn't matter how major or minor the cancer.

To reserve a place at the table with other survivors, call (940) 325-1447. The Palo Pinto County Sheriff’s Posse building is located at 1300 Farm-to-Market Road 1821, in Mineral Wells.
